Navigating Through Polish Language Websites – Pelplin Diocese
Navigating through various Polish Diocese websites will generally be similar for one and all. I’d like to give a basic navigation overview, specifically for the Pelpliń Diocese website in this post. Below is a screenshot of the Pelpliń Diocese homepage.
Diecezja Pelplińska. (2013). Strona główna. Retrieved February 22, 2014, from http://diecezja-pelplin.pl/
In the top right corner of the homepage there is a “Great Britain” flag representing an English translation for the website. Do not let this fool you, there is only contact information for the Diocese listed in English. The main navigation links that I’d like to detail are the following: Strona Glówna (Home or Home Page), Dekanaty i Parafie (Deaneries and Parishes), and Historia (History).
The History section is split into four parts: Kapłani zmarli – Deceased Priests (listing of the priests who had died that were from the Diocese); Poczet Biskupów – fellowship of Bishops (a list of Bishops for the Diocese); Wybór literatury – Selection of Literature (a list of various publications about the history of the Diocese); and Kalendarium – Calendar (a calendar of major events within the Diocese).
The main area of navigation on the website that I’d like to point out is Dekanaty i Parafie section. After selecting the link for the Dekanaty i Parafie section, the following screen displays.
Diecezja Pelplińska. (2013). Dekanaty i parafie. Retrieved February 22, 2014, from http://diecezja-pelplin.pl/dekanaty-i-parafie
The page displays an annual list of the deaneries within the Diocese. This list was last updated in 2012. After clicking on any of the deaneries, a new webpage displays with information for the parishes that comprise the deanery. I chose the Kościerzyna Deanery – Dekanat Kościerski (results are displayed below).
Diecezja Pelplińska. (2013). Dekanat kościerski. Retrieved February 22, 2014, from http://diecezja-pelplin.pl/dekanaty-i-parafie?sid=118:Dekanat-Koscierski
If you’d like to see the details listed for a parish, then you’d click the link to open a new webpage/window. As an example, I’ve clicked the link for Parafia Świętego Michała Archanioła – Parish of St. Michael the Archangel. The results are shown below.
Diecezja Pelplińska. (2013). Parafia świętego Michała archanioła. Retrieved February 22, 2014, from http://diecezja-pelplin.pl/dekanaty-i-parafie?pid=118&sid=267:Parafia-Swietego-Michala-Archaniola
Here are the details in English:

Church Celebrations (Odpust): St. Michael the Archangel on September 29th – Transfiguration of the Lord on August 6th – Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29th.
To gain more information on the history of the parish, I would suggest searching for the parish website. Below, I searched for St. Michael the Archangel in Lipusz (Św. Michała Archanioła w lipuszu) and found the website for the Lipusz Parish.
Once on the website for the Lipusz Parish (St. Michael the Archangel), navigating to the parish history is relatively easy by clicking on link titled “O parafii” or “about the parish”. The history for most Polish Parishes will be written in the Polish language. It’s up to the researcher to determine how valuable they think the listed history will be and then attempting a translation. I tend to feel that the history is valuable, but I am fascinated by history and feel that it adds to my genealogical research.

I hope the navigation tips help to provide some insight on how to find information on a Polish Diocese website. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding this post.
