Indexing Project – Geneteka Part One
Hello,
In a previous blog post, I had commented on new links that I added to Al’s Polish-American Genealogy Research blog. In particular, I added links for various Polish church record indexing/transcription projects. I would like to take the opportunity to familiarize researchers on the use of the Geneteka website.
Geneteka is a Polish language website that houses church records that have been indexed and are from the various territories within Poland. I would like to define in English how the website works and how it can be utilized for researching Polish roots.
The descriptions of the screen shot’s below will focus on the search bar on the Geneteka website. As I go forward, please click on the picture that I am describing to view it in greater detail. The links that I will be talking about are located next to the little Polish Flag on the Geneteka menu bar (from left to right). The first icon is shaped as a “Home”, by clicking this link a user will proceed to the Genealodzy.PL (Polish Genealogical Societies Services) website. Please ignore this link for now.
The picture below is of the “Strona Główna” link (the icon that is shaped like Poland). This icon is the Geneteka indexing project home page. After clicking on this icon, the page will display as seen below. The map that will display, shows each area of Poland (and previous areas of Poland) that are included in the indexing project. The right side of the webpage displays each Polish State, along with the number of parishes, the amount of church registers, and the number of indexed records. (I will dig deeper into the functionality and useability of this section of the Geneteka website in an upcoming post).

The next icon is shaped as a magnifying glass. This link is called “Wyszukaj nazwisko w zasobach” or “search for the name in the resource index”. This page lists each territory and the number of church record events that have been indexed thus far, as seen below. (I will dig deeper into the functionality and useability of this section of the Geneteka website in an upcoming post).

The next icon is shaped as a ladder (I believe) and is called “Opracowane zasoby” or “Design resources” in English. This page lists each territory and then lists each parish that has been indexed within that territory. Each parish that is listed contains details about the type of record that was indexed and the years that the indexed records span.

The next icon looks like a pencil and the letter A. The icon is called “Autorzy indeksów” or “the index of authors”. This page lists each indexing author by name, and the number of total records indexed. The total is then broken down into the number of baptismal, death, and marriage records that the author indexed.

The following icon is shaped as a clock and is called “Zasoby w trakcie indeksacji” or “resources used during indexing”. This page lists the parish, the parish location, type of records, years of records, and the indexer’s name.

The final icon on the Geneteka menu bar is the symbol of a wrench and is called “Jak indeksować” or “To index”. This page is used as the Geneteka indexing key and provides information on how to use and read the Geneteka indexing website. (I will dig deeper into the functionality and useability of this section of the Geneteka website in an upcoming post).

In upcoming posts, I will describe in greater detail the various search features and options that are available on the Geneteka website. There is a wealth of information that is available to search through, if one digs deep enough.
Best Regards,
Al
