Genealogy Research Books
Hello,
Anything that can help a researcher mine valuable data from Polish Parish Records is definitely helpful. This past year I have looked for anything that may help me read and understand the information within these Polish records. Besides the internet, I thought that there had to be something available that would help. Months ago I came across books written by Professor Jonathan D. Shea. I had seen that he was just releasing a book that dealt with Polish research from North America to Poland. The book was entitled “Going Home: A Guide to Polish American Family History Research” by Jonathan D. Shea. I was more than pleased with the detail and depth of the information in this book. Everything from history, geography, records available in both North America and Europe, tranlation guides, the Polish language, and the location of where information can be found is located within the pages. This book is invaluable for Polish research.
I was so impressed with this book that I just ordered two more books written Jonathan Shea that deal with translating documents pertaining to Polish genealogy. The books are listed below:
In Their Words: A Genealogist’s Translation Guide to Polish, German, Latin and RussianDocuments. Volume 1: Polish written by: Jonathan D. Shea and William F. Hoffman
In Their Words: A Genealogist’s Translation Guide to Polish, German, Latin, and Russian Documents – Volume II: Russian written by: Jonathan D. Shea and William F. Hoffman
I am looking forward to using both.
After reading the post regarding proper genealogy record citations on Steve’s Genealogy Blog (http://stephendanko.com/blog/2008/07/31/source-citations-for-polish-parish-records/), I ordered the book that Steve suggested. The book is titled:
Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace written by Elizabeth Shown Mills
Also,
I have found out that there are two books that contain pictures and histories of my Wierzba family from the Portage County, Wisconsin Area. I have ordered one and have the other being delivered on loan from Cardinal Stritch University. I am really looking forward to these two books. This is a goldmine!, One picture has my great-great-grandparents (Vincent Sr. and Victoria) in it and the other has my great grandfather Vincent Jr. Again, I am really looking forward to the arrival of these books!!! They are titled:
Native Realm: The Polish-American Community of Portage County, 1857-1992 written by Michael J. Goc
A Photo Album of the Past: Pioneer Scenes and Portraits From Central Wisconsin Volume I written by Malcolm Rosholt and Margaret Rosholt
…and finally, I also recently ordered a photo book of pictures taken of the Polish south side of Milwaukee. This is titled:
Illuminating the Particular: Photographs of Milwaukee’s Polish South Side by Christel T. Maass & Roman B. J. Kwasniewski
Lots of books, but definitely well worth it. Each of these will be valuable resources for my research.
Best Regards,
Al
