Kujawy – Gmina Raciążek History
Hello,
In the year 1402, the King of Poland, Wladyslaw Jagiello, received the castle as tribute from Ulryk von Osten, Count Drezdenka, and in 1404 with the advise of the Royal Council he conducted talks with the Krzyżakami (Teutonic Knights) which inturn regained the land of Dobrzyń. After winning the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, Wladyslaw Jagiello gathereed strength and led the peace talks with the Teutonic Order at the castle Raciąsek. This led to the peace in Torun (Treat of Thorn) in the year 1411.
The years 1464 – 1500 were followed by a thorough reconstruction of the castle with Gothic ornaments. In the year 1734, Bishop Krzysztof Szembek built a palace with Italian garden. The palace had a storyed mansard roof. With Poland’s collapse the palace fell to ruin.
In the year 1827, Prussian administrator Sydow led to the destruction of the palace by stripping the brick foundations, which were made available for the construction of the stables in Torun, the brewery and court manor in Ostrowąs and the farm in Straszewo.
In in the summer of the year 1830, Gene Paskiewicz led an army from Raciążek across the Vistula river (ancient bed), through Brzesk and Lowicz to Warsaw to help out the November Uprising against the Tsar’s army. In the year 1867, Raciążek lost its’ city rights.
Among the most interesting monuments in Raciążka, is the parish church from the late sixteenth century, which was built in the Gothic style. The church was issued in the year 1597, by founder Bishop H. Rozrażewski of Kujawsko – Pomerania. During the occupation of the church it was robbed of its’ most valuable things, the alter from the fourteenth century was also stolen.
