Wierzba’s in the Lipusz Parish 1850’s -1860’s
Hello,
After discovering that Marcin and Julianna Kulas nee Wierzba, along with family, immigrated to America in 1861, I am re-accessing some of the Wierzba families that were baptising children during the 1850’s-1860’s. There were some Wierzba daughters that married and were having children during this timeframe and then stopped.
First I thought that they may have died while giving birth, but there were five families that had suddenly vanished. I did not find a death record for any of the five Wierzba daughters. The five couples were:
Marcin Kulas and Julianna Wierzba
Jacob Stolzmann and Wiktoria Wierzba
Jozef Nyca and Jozefina Wierzba
Mathias Szlachetka and Anna Wierzba
Franciszek Cubulski and Katarzyna Wierzba
After digging and digging, I finally found Macin Kulas and Julianna Wierzba in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. This was a huge break through. Then I found their passenger list, which was also a big find. This led me to believe that I may find these other families in Milwaukee. I need to keep digging….
As I was digging through the St. Stanisalus Parish records I came across a surname, which was “Nyka”. This caught my eye immediately. I then started to search through the census records trying to find a Nyka living in Milwaukee before 1880, but I had no luck. I did find a Nytza and after reviewing the hand writing on the census record, I can see how Nyka could be mistaken for Nytza. The parents on this census were listed as Jozef and Jozefina. After this find I was ready to once again look through the St. Stanislaus Parish records.
Bingo!!!
I found a marriage record for Katarzyna Nyca. This record lists Katarzyna’s parents as Jozef Nyca and Jozefina Wierzba!!!
The Nyca family arrived in America on the same passenger ship (Arcole, July 13, 1861) as Marcin and Julianna Kulas, but I had over looked them. Their name was spelled as Nytza on the same page as Kulas.
I now have found 2 of the 5 families that were “missing” in the Lipusz Parish. I still need to locate: Stoltzmann, Szlachetka, and Cubulski.
Best Regards,
Al
